Integrity Breeds Success: If it’s to be, it’s up to me!
Do you possess everything you want? Think about it. What DO you want?
I bet you have what you want, but maybe not what you desire. I’m going to make the case that we attain what we desire when we reach for it.
See if this sounds logical …
You may be born with the proverbial silver spoon in your mouth and receive every opportunity in the universe. But if you don’t have the desire to reach a certain goal, you will not generate enough enthusiasm to work to reach it.
For those of us in healthcare, that first desire manifested when we made the decision to hit the books, struggle through classes, and learn everything possible to pass the licensing exams.
What did it take to get through the prep time? It took integrity: the quality of living out morally upright principles like honesty. Why?
Obviously, in healthcare, we have a heavy responsibility. What we do or don’t can make the difference between life and death. If we can’t be trusted, we could kill someone.
Once you were licensed, you took this quality of integrity as your banner into close quarters with patients. Your integrity permitted you entrance into a stranger’s private life.
It’s what we are known for, and it’s a quality Miss Nightingale required of her nurses. That is why, for the 16th year, we nurses have been voted the most honest, upright, and TRUSTED profession.
This banner of integrity precedes us; it is our brand.
When you harness the passion, dedication, and work ethic required to hone your knowledge and skills, learning lessons from every bump along the way, that’s the simple and divine blend of qualities that generate success in attaining what we desire.
As nurses, I hope we always wake up thinking it’s a great day to be enjoyed and not a sentence to be endured. Come to think of it, that’s the attitude you need to make your dreams come true – no matter what your profession.
I challenge you to take the first baby step to make your desires a reality. Because, as a friend of mine says, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me!”
